RIFUGIO GRAFFER EXTENSION

KOSY Collective and CRUSH Architects have partnered for the design of the refurbishment and renovation of the historic Rifugio Graffer located in the Brenta Dolomites in northern Italy.

The Rifugio Graffer refurbishment and extension project aims to breathe new life into an iconic alpine structure. Through the refurbishment of the existing building and the addition of a new architectural volume, the project aspires to integrate modern functionality while preserving the refuge's historical character. Our design concept is rooted in taking full advantage of the panoramic views of the Dolomites de Brenta, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the awe-inspiring natural beauty that surrounds the refuge.

The extension project for Rifugio Graffer focuses on enhancing the spatial organization of the existing alpine structure while capitalizing on the spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Through the addition of a new architectural volume and thoughtful redistribution of space within the current building, the project aims to seamlessly integrate new functionalities while preserving the refuge's historical character.

Spatial optimization is at the core of the project, with particular emphasis on connectivity and flow between different areas of the refuge. A central staircase acts as a pivotal element, linking various levels and facilitating efficient movement throughout the building. This strategic design choice enhances accessibility and ensures a cohesive layout that enhances the overall user experience.

Exploiting the breathtaking views offered by the refuge's location is another key objective of the project.

The redesign of the entrance and the addition of a panoramic terrace provide guests with unparalleled opportunities to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings.Careful consideration has been given to the placement of windows and outdoor seating areas to maximize sightlines and create moments of connection with the landscape.

Structural solutions have been implemented to minimize disruption to the existing refuge while optimizing space utilization and views. By strategically positioning the new construction to the southeast, the project minimizes environmental impact and maximizes opportunities for unobstructed vistas. Lightweight materials, such as wood and glass, have been selected to ensure structural integrity while promoting transparency and connection with the natural environment.

The extension project for Rifugio Graffer offers a direct and practical approach to enhancing spatial organization and exploiting panoramic views. Through thoughtful design choices and strategic structural solutions, the project aims to create a refuge that seamlessly blends modern functionality with the natural beauty of its surroundings, providing guests with an unforgettable alpine experience.
